Marrakech or Fes First? Our Honest Opinion
It's one of the most asked questions. Answer: it depends on your profile. We explain.
It's THE classic question for travelers planning a trip to Morocco. Marrakech, the vibrant one, or Fez, the timeless one? The answer depends on your profile.
## Marrakech first: for whom?
Choose Marrakech if you are:
- A first-time visitor to Morocco (Marrakech is the simplest entry point, most flights, most infrastructure)
- A thrill-seeker (quad, hot air balloon, Agafay desert 30 min away)
- A foodie (the best modern Moroccan restaurants are in Marrakech)
- A nightlife lover (the medina rooftops, Le Comptoir, Kabana)
- A photographer (Marrakech's light is magical, especially at dawn and sunset)
- A riad enthusiast (the most beautiful in the country are in Marrakech)
- A family traveler (more suitable activities, more pools)
Practical advantages:
- International airport with more direct flights from Europe
- 2h30 from Essaouira, 3h from Ouarzazate, 30 min from Agafay
- More high-end accommodations
- Nightlife and shopping
- More agencies and French-speaking guides
## Fez first: for whom?
Choose Fez if you are:
- A passionate of history and art (the Fez el-Bali medina is the largest pedestrian area in the world, UNESCO-listed)
- A craft lover (Fez is the capital of Moroccan craftsmanship: blue pottery, leather, zelliges, copper)
- A seeker of authenticity (Fez has preserved a medieval way of life, without Marrakech's tourist-friendly developments)
- A photographer (the medina is a photogenic maze, the tanneries are unique in the world)
- An epicurean (Fassi cuisine is the most refined in the country)
- A seeker of calm (Fez is much quieter than Marrakech)
Practical advantages:
- More authentic, fewer foreign tourists
- Crafts are cheaper (prices are less inflated for tourists)
- The Fez el-Bali medina is the only one in Morocco to have preserved its medieval way of life
- Closer to Chefchaouen (4h), Meknes (1h), Volubilis (1h), Middle Atlas (Ifrane, Azrou)
## Both! Our recommendation
If you have 7 days or more, do both. It's the perfect combination:
- 3 nights in Marrakech + 1 night in Agafay or Essaouira
- 2 nights in Fez + excursion to Chefchaouen and Volubilis
- Connection: domestic flight (45 min) or train (7h, beautiful landscapes)
If you have 5 days, choose Marrakech as a base, with a day trip to Fez (it's possible but tiring, ~7h train each way).
If you have 3 days, stay in Marrakech without hesitation.
## Our hybrid itinerary (10 days)
Days 1-4: Marrakech (medina, Essaouira, Atlas, Agafay)
Day 5: Domestic flight Marrakech → Fez
Days 6-8: Fez (medina, Volubilis, Meknes, Chefchaouen)
Day 9: Train Fez → Casablanca (4h)
Day 10: Return flight from Casablanca
This combo shows you the best of both cities without the 6h+ drive between them.
